Locomotive Mechanic

Geneva, NY $23.50 to $27.00 per hour Posted September 16, 2026

Position Summary

A Locomotive Mechanic's responsibilities include general mechanical duties including, but not limited to, inspecting, servicing, repairing and maintaining diesel locomotives. Must have a working knowledge of hand tools and be able to work in adverse seasonal conditions.

General Duties

  • Operate general hand tools
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, air brakes, running gear and other locomotive components
  • Inspect, repair, and install electrical components
  • Fabricate, cut, shape, and perform finish operations using various types of materials
  • Perform periodic service on locomotives
  • Comply with railroad safety and operating rules

Job Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to work from written and verbal instructions
  • Must be able to work with a team, take direction from supervisors, adhere to work schedules, focus attention on details, and follow work rules
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be able to work varying shifts, including weekends and overtime as required
  • Must be able to occasionally work in varying weather conditions
  • Must be able to submit to and be able to pass a drug screen
  • Maintain a good attendance record
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Must be willing to wear required personal protective equipment

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand and walk on uneven surfaces for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to carry and lift 30 lbs. frequently and push and pull 75 lbs. frequently
  • Must be able to carry and lift occasionally 50–90 lbs., push and pull 250 lbs. and grip 100 lbs.

Rate of Pay

$23.50 to $27.00 per hour, depending on experience and relevant qualifications

Employment with FGLK is contingent upon the successful completion of job function demands and medical examination. The examination includes a drug screen and assessment to ensure that candidates can safely perform the essential functions of the job. In addition, the company conducts for-cause, post-accident, and random drug & alcohol testing of its employees.
